Movie Review: Girl With a Pearl Earring (2003)

Girl With a Pearl Earring is a fictional tale of a real life painting of the same title, by the 17th century Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer. The character of the maid in the painting, Griet, is played by the beautiful Scarlett Johansson, and the painter is played by Colin Firth. The romance drama is about how a reclusive painter took a liking in his new maid, and got inspired to paint her for his sole client, a rich aristocrat in his town.  It is slow paced, and shows how the painter developed some level of affection for the maid, and how she grew fond of her master too, but they never got intimate. She was more like his muse for the masterpiece he went on to create when he decided to paint her.

Movie Review: Dirty Deeds (2005)

Dirty Deeds is a 2005 High School Romance Comedy. It is all about a high school senior trying to impress a girl by doing the dirty deeds, which the girl's brother was set up to do, so as to save the kid, and get the girl to like him. The deeds are 10 dares, like a challenge with ten almost impossible task you have to do on a particular day on homecoming weekend. Although very challenging, he ended up impresses in the girl at the end of the day.

This movie is a fun movie, not so romantic per se. There are so many different characters...numerous funny characters, all revolving around the the main guy and girl. It also has very nice, and well timed cameos by big shots like Zoe Saldana, and Mark Derwen. If you want to kick back and just watch something light, you can get this. I would give this movie a 6.5 out of 10 in rating. Oh, and there are a lot of boobies all over the place...Be warned. lol!

Movie Review: Cruel Intentions (1999)

Cruel Intentions is a romance drama with some comedy in the mix. Sebastian (played by Ryan Phillippe)and Kathryn (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) are teenage stepbrother and stepsister that live very sexually active lives. They like to plan ways to get their next conquests, team up, and make people's lives miserable. After a new girl, Annette (Reese Witherspoon) moves into the neighborhood, Sebastian and Kathryn have a bet- If Sebastian can get in her pants, Kathryn would finally grant him his heart's desire of wanting to sleep with her (Kathryn). And if he loses the bet, then Kathryn would get his exotic car. The bet was a tough one cos Annette, the girl in question was a 'miss goody two shoes,' who had sworn to keep her virginity till she found true love. The cold and heartless Sebastian went to work on her immediately, charming her, and using all his moves on her. But, for the first time, he found himself developing real feelings for the girl who was just meant to be a target.

Movie Review: Two Night Stand (2014)

Two Night Stand is a romance comedy about two people, Megan (Analeigh Tipton) and Alec (Miles Teller) who get trapped together because of a New York snow storm, after a one night stand. It was just meant to be a one night stand which was orchestrated online, till the blizzard, which made it a Two Night Stand. lol! So, this movie has a small cast, and there is about 80% screen-time focused on the two main characters.

Movie Review: Crush (2013)

This is actually labelled a thriller. but I would just call it a Romance Suspense movie for the purpose of this review. I accidentally watched it. and it didn't regret I did.

Movie Review: The Perks of Being a Wall Flower (2012)

This movie actually started out as a Romance Comedy, and then the drama crept in. Charlie (Logan Lerman) is a freshman in high school that is looking to at least make it through the 1,385 days of high school without drama. He just wanted to make it through in peace, even if it meant not having any fun at all. Till he met two seniors, Patrick (Ezra Miller) and the beautiful Sam (Emma Watson). He went to meet their other friends, and things seemed to change for him drastically; he was now having so much fun with his new found clique, till he got into a love triangle between two of his friends.

A struggling couple (Diana and David) on the verge of losing their home and investments hit Las Vegas to try out their luck. Just like most gambling experiences in real life, they started out winning, and then they stretched their luck and lost everything. Down and out, they had an encounter with a billionaire (Robert Redford) at the casino. After Diana (Demi Moore's character) helped him win a million dollars, he invited them for dinner. During their discussion later that night, the rich man brought up the theory that money could buy any and everything. Diana and David didn't agree with him. To test his theory, he offered to pay them a million dollars if Diana could spend a night with him.

Movie Review: Brokeback Mountain (2005)

This is a love story about two cowboys, Ennis and Jack (Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal's characters), who spend so much time together and start to develop feelings for each other. In other words, it is a movie about two gay lovers. After the summer they spent tending sheep together in brokeback mountain, they tried to fight the feelings and live normal lives. They even went on to get married and have kids, but after 4 years, they connect again. Back in the 60s/70s, homosexuality wasn't as accepted as it currently is in the America, so they had to meet in secret, and as the years passed, it got harder to meetup, cos of their separate lives and families.

Movie Review: She's All That (1999)

Zack (role played by Freddie Prinze Jr.), the most good-looking jock in a high school gets ditched by his girlfriend, 6 weeks to Prom. While downplaying the effect it might have on his status, he had a bet with his best buddie, Dean (Paul Walker's character), that he could turn any girl into a prospective Prom Queen in 6 weeks, just by dating her. The bet was on, and the Dean chose Laney (Rachael Leigh Cook), a recluse geek as the experimental girl. The battle was on, and Zack got more than what he bargained for.

Movie Review: Accidental Love (2015)

Accidental Love is a romance comedy with much more comedy than romance. You could even say it is a comedy movie, with just a little sprinkle of romance on it. As a comedy, it is quite funny, but as a romance movie, it is just okay.

Alice (Jessica Biel's character), a small town waitress is accidentally shot in the head with a nail gun at a restaurant where her boyfriend is proposing to her. She is rushed to the hospital, and just before a surgery is to be down, the hospital officials discover she doesn't have insurance. The operation is stopped, and she is sent home, with the nail still lodge in her head, which starts to affect her mentality and makes her do crazy stuff. While watching TV one day, she sees the advert of a senator (role played by Jake Gyllenhaal) from her state, and she went in search of the man, with the hope that he may be able to help her situation.

Movie Review: Trainwreck (2015)

A girl grew up with the belief that it is sad to have to play with only one doll all your life, so she applied it to her dating life, and made sure she never got stuck with one man for too long. Trainwreck is a romance comedy about Amy (Amy Schumer's character), her numerous casual sex encounters, and how she mistakenly fell in love.

Gilcrest is a former military man, who is now a military contractor. He got a big job in Hawaii, a place he left 13 years ago, where his ex girlfriend who he hasn't seen for 13 years still resides. They rekindle their love, and he finds out so many information about their past relationship he never knew about. Movie Review: Flipped (2010)

Flipped is a romance drama about two young teenagers (Bryce and Juli) who live across the street from each other, and how they found love. The boy started out seeing the girl as a an annoying pest he had to do everything to get away from. But with time, as the years went by, and he grew older, certain events made him fall hard for Juli Barker (played by Madeline Carroll).

Movie Review: My Boss's Daughter (2003)

My Boss's Daughter is a very funny romance comedy. I have read a lot of bad reviews on this movie, but I guess most people just don't get it. This is not a serious RomCom, and shouldn't be judge based on normal standards of a romance movie. It is more like a spoof movie. I also like how they try to downplay racism by making jokes of ethnicity stereotypes.

Movie Review: Blind Dating (2006)

A blind guy, Danny (played by Chris Pine) is advised by his brother to start dating, as he is in his mid twenties and has never had a girlfriend before, not to speak of even having sex. So, his very outgoing brother, who owns a limo service company, and has a lot of call girl clients, start to set him up on dates, which all end in disasters. About the same time, Danny is having regular appointments and tests with his doctor, who wants to try out a new brain surgery which would connect Danny's visual cortex, with camera glasses, which might help him see again. There happened to be a beautiful Indian girl working at the hospital, and with time, she and Danny developed feelings for eachother.

But ofcos, she is Indian, and Danny is Italian America, so if it was left to just the two of them, they would ride off into the sunset, and live happily ever after, but they had their parents and cultures to consider.

Movie Review: I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)

I Love You, Beth Cooper is a romance comedy, with a little bit more comedy than romance. But in all the crazy, rib cracking, high tempo comedy, the love story lies within.

A High school graduate, Denis Cooverman (played by Paul Rust) followed his friend's advise to announce his love for Beth Cooper (Hayden Panettiere's character), a head cheerleader at his school, during his valedictorian speech. He was surprised when the girl got attracted to him because of that one move. It shocked him when she showed up at his house for a party he invited her for later that day, but things got really crazy when her hyper active drug addicted boyfriend showed up on his doorstep, ready to clubber him to death with two of his other macho friends. From then on, it is one roller-coaster ride, till things simmered down a bit in the last 15 minutes of the movie.

Movie Review: When Harry Met Sally (1989)

When Harry Met Sally is an 80s Romance Comedy, staring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal. Sally (Meg Ryan's character) decides to drive her friend's boyfriend, Harry (played by Billy Crystal) on an 18 hour drive cross-country, and...Nope, they didn't fall in-love, they just had a nice time discussing conflicting issues they had. Harry Came up with the theory that a man and woman couldn't be just friends, cos man would always want to sleep with any female friend he has at one point. Sally didn't agree with this assumptions of his, so they ended up not being friends, and just said their goodbyes after the long trip.

They meet a couple of more times after that trip, and at some point, maybe the third meeting, they decided maybe, just maybe they could be friends. But, in the end, it seemed Harry's theory was right after all.

Movie Review: French Kiss (1995)

French Kiss is a classic romance comedy staring Meg Ryan, and Kevin Kline. I saw this as a teenager when it came out in 1995, while in High School, and it still looks as fresh as ever when I watched it again an hour ago. Meg Ryan's character, Kate is on the verge of starting a family with the love of her life till he travels to France, and falls in love with a sexy young French girl. Living in denial, Kate decided to travel to France with the aim of getting her man back; believing that if he could just see her in person, he would change his mind.

On her mission, she got mixed up with a middle aged criminal French man, and their lives get entangled. He helped her with her mission, and she also helped with his goal.

Movie Review: The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

Good

This is a romance comedy...a little more on the comedy side. It gets romantic after the first half of the movie. The 40 Year Old Virgin is really really funny.

So Steve Carell's character, Andy is still a virgin at 40 years old. After his friends/co-worker find out, they look for a way to help him out. Most of the help turns out to be a disasters, till a Lady, Trish walks into the store he works at, and they got talking naturally, and she actually gave him her number without him really trying to get it.

Movie Review: The Notebook (2004)

Very Very Good

This is the real deal; a gem. I watched it when it first came out in 2004, and just finished watching it again, and it had the same effect on me. It is a timeless classic of a Romance Drama.

Movie Review: Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Very Good

I thought this movie wasn't going to work with all the many A List actors thrown in the mix, but it is a great movie, and a very good romance comedy, with the drama on the side.

Movie Review: A Walk to Remember(2002)

Good

This is a high school romance drama movie. It's about a popular boy in school, who got into trouble, and had to do some community service, which brought him into constant close proximity of a not so popular girl. With time, and with her helping him with his acting role, he grew fond of her, even though she warned him not to fall in love with her at the beginning of their friendship. He didn't understand why she had said that till he had fallen in love with her.

Movie Review: The Spectacular Now (2013)

Very Good

This started out as a romance comedy, then delved into more serious stuff in the realm of drama. Sutter is a lovable and popular highschool kid who loves to make everyone happy, even at the expense of his own happiness. While helping his best friend get a girl, his girlfriend showed up and misinterpreted what was going on. She broke up with him, and he went off the tangent, binge drinking, and ended up passed out on the lawn of a house, in an unknown neighborhood.

Movie Review: Bandslam (2009)

Very Good

This is one of the best high school movies I have seen so far. When I first got it, I watched it like every weekend, or every time I was down. The movie is about a musically inclined kid, Will Burton who was very unpopular at his high school because of an incident that happened with his dad. He got home one day and found out his Mom had gotten a new job in another city, which meant he would be changing schools- It was the happiest day of his life.

Movie Review: I do, I do, I do (2015)

After the wedding, she felt she had made a grave mistake and wished for a do-over. Then she went to bed, and her wish came through...she woke up back on her wedding day, and lived through the day again, and again, and again, and again. It was like she was stuck in a cosmic loop. She almost lost her mind after the third day of living through her wedding day again. She later decided to make the best of the situation she had found herself.

Movie Review: The Best of Me (2014)

Good

The Best of Me is a romantic drama...with a very sad ending. Amanda and Dawson were lovers as teenagers in high school, but a series of unfortunate events tore them apart, and forced them to live separate lives. After 20 years of not being in touch, a mutual friend of theirs died, and they got to see again. And as you would guess, the love is still there, and they start to wish they had never gone apart.

Movie Review: Begin Again (2013)

Good

Begin Again is a musical movie with a romantic tip. A music producer/A&R guy way passed his prime and in a bad financial state meets a young music writer named Gretta (played by Keira Knightley). He heard her sing at a bar and instantly fell in love with her talent. Movie Review: The First Time (2012)

Very Very Good

This is not your typical high school romance comedy. First of all, the way the movie starts off is just genius. I mean, it is not some complicated plot or anything, the ball was set rolling right from the first scene of the movie. As in, boy meets girl, girl really likes him...that kind of thing. But this is not in a cheesy way or anything.

Movie Review: Magic in the Moonlight (2014)

Very Good

Magic in the Moonlight is a romance comedy set in the 1920s. It has Colin Firth playing the role of Stanley, a magician and trickster, who makes it a hobby exposing fortune tellers and spiritualists. He was broth in by his childhood friend to expose a young fortune teller by the name of Sophie (played by Emma Stone). He was blown away by her gift, and started to challenge what he had always believed in all his life.

Movie Review: The Duff (2015)

The Duff is a lovely, refreshing high school romance comedy. By the way, DUFF is an acronym for Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Although it might sound harsh, but there are a lot of DUFFs out there. You know...the person you talk to just to get information about her beautiful friends. Don't be offended if you are a DUFF, I was once one too. lol!

Movie Review: In Your Eyes (2014)

This is a very different kind of romance movie; a sci-fi romance. For some weird scientific or spiritual reasons, Rebecca and Dylan have some sort of connection between each other, like they share one soul, but in different bodies. Anything Rebecca feels, Dylan feels.

Tuesday, 28 April 2015

Movie Review: Wedding Ringer (2015)

This is a romance comedy with a little more comedy than romance. Well, it is a Kevin Hart movie...what do you expect? The plot goes...Kevin Hart's character, Jerry helps grooms that don't have an option for a bestman for their wedding. He acts as their bestman and makes fantastic speeches at their weddings, and he gets paid handsomely for his services.

Movie Review: 16-Love (2012)

This is an okay romance comedy. It started out very promising, but plateaued afterwards. A junior tennis champion, Ally knows nothing but Tennis, until she injures her ankle during a game and has to take a little break. In that 'time-out' she learns to live the life of a normal teenager. While she helps the clumsy Farrell Gambles to get better at tennis, he helps her on lost times as a youth.

Movie Review: Keith (2008)

This is a great high school romance movie...a romance drama. Natalie had everything in check; great boyfriend, good GPA, great at Tennis, a nice family...and then Keith showed up. Even though she was dating Raff, Keith kept making her spend a lot of time with him; from being lab partners, to playing pranks on some of their Teachers, at 4 a:m.

Movie Review: Love, Rosie (2014)

Alex and Rosie have been best friends since they were kids. Both of them secretly always wanted to be more than just friends, but were too scared to make that move. They went on like that; from high school, to after high school, to Alex moving away to America (from Britain), to Rosie having a baby for another guy, to both getting married to different people at a point...But they ended up back together.

This is a cool love story, but I find it hard to accept that it was the girl trying to make the move from friendship to lovers, while the guy played naive; till maybe after the first half of the movie. Of cos there are a lot of guys that get 'friendzoned' for a long time, but none would stay there when the girl is making efforts to get them to 'lovers-zone.'

This romance drama gets a 6.5/10 rating from me. It's an OKAY movie.

Movie Review: Cloudy with a Chance of Love (2015)

Cloudy with a Chance of Love is a Hallmark TV Movie. An academician is thrust unto TV by luck, or should I say fate. The meteorologist expert is turned into a Weather Girl, but at a price. Her aspirations suffer, as well as her personal relationships. Then she starts to develop feelings for the man that gave her the huge opportunity.

Movie Review: Stuck in Love (2012)

This is a romance drama about a family of writers and their weird love lives. The father is still in love with his ex-wife (the mother of his two kids), and so he walks to her apartment at night and spies on her, hoping to catch his ex-wife and her new husband in the middle of an argument, which usually gives him satisfaction. His son is in love with a girl in class who he enjoys watching from afar, till she inspires him to write a poem, which he had to read in front of the whole class; she was impressed by this and they started dating. The daughter is a promiscuous teenager in college, who uses her sexual experiences as both motivation and material for writing....till a particular person walked into her life and made her change her ways

Movie Review: All of My Heart (2015)

All of My Heart is a lovely romance comedy; a TV Movie. A lady cook breaks up with her long time boyfriend when it seems their relationship isn't going anywhere and her guy is more concerned about his career. As luck would have it, she also inherited a house around the same time.

Movie Review: Barefoot (2014)

Scott Speedman plays the lead role in this romance comedy (as Jay Wheeler). He is a man that can't seem to get his life together; always in debt, and seem to always get in trouble. He works at a mental institution as a janitor. One day, a new female patient followed him out of the hospital because he had saved her from being sexually assaulted by another janitor.

Movie Review: Odd Girl Out (2005)

Odd Girl Out is a TV movie about bullying among girls in high-school. It has Alexa Vega playing the role of Vanessa; an insecure pretty girl who has the member of her clique and best friend, Stacey (played by Leah Pipes) verbally bully her consistently. Vanessa's whole crew turned against her at the request of Stacey, and she went deeper and deeper into depression, till she started skipping classes.

Movie Review: Prom (2011)

This movie is about Prom, and all the drama that goes on weeks before that great night. It just doesn't center on the life of one girl and her close friends, but on multiple characters and their love lives. I think one big plus in this movie is how all those characters really interest you and not just the main character.

Movie Review: She's The Man (2006)

I first watched this movie with my little niece the year it was released, and I loved it instantly. I mean, I loved it so much that I went out and got the DVD, and watched like hundred times after that. This is most definitely Amanda Bynes's best; at least for now, until she gets back that magic she had in this movie.

Word from the Editor

Hey guys! My name is Kay, and I'll be thrilling you with romance movie reviews on this blog. I love chick flicks and I thought 'why not write movie reviews' about the latest and old romance movies. Actually, I had a blog on movie reviews some years back, but I deleted it when I got busy with life.

I have more time to myself now, and decided to start this again. So...Here we go!!!
