Movie Review: Brokeback Mountain (2005)

This is a love story about two cowboys, Ennis and Jack (Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal's characters), who spend so much time together and start to develop feelings for each other. In other words, it is a movie about two gay lovers. After the summer they spent tending sheep together in brokeback mountain, they tried to fight the feelings and live normal lives. They even went on to get married and have kids, but after 4 years, they connect again. Back in the 60s/70s, homosexuality wasn't as accepted as it currently is in the America, so they had to meet in secret, and as the years passed, it got harder to meetup, cos of their separate lives and families.

People say getting into character for the dark role of Joker in The Dark Knight (2008) led to Heath Ledger's demise, as he couldn't shake off that darkness after filming the movie. I would totally disagree with that. I believe shooting this movie had a lot to do with Ledger's death. Why? The intensity through which he portrayed his character, Ennis Del Mar is captivating. I mean, he and Jake Gyllenhaal make the acting look so real. For two heterosexual men to play homosexual lovers, it must have taken a lot of getting into character. They are both method actors, and had to totally become those people they were portraying onscreen. The truth is. love is love; we all have the tendency to develop intimate feelings for people of opposite sex, and I fee that Ledger got to the point in his life, where he became unsure of his sexuality, and started fighting to suppress that feeling, just like his character in the movie.

This movie was accepted greatly because it successfully captured what gay people go through; the humiliation, stigmatization, the suppression of feeling, not being able to express how they really feel in public, etc. A lot of people live this way; whether openly gay, or in the closet, and that is why a lot of people could relate to this. It brought tears to a lot of people's eyes, cos it was like they were watching their lives onscreen. The kiss by Ennis and Jack when they reunited after 4 years is so powerful, and Ledger and Gyllenhall gave it their all...in fact, they were so convincing, that I am sure they too would feel they were actually gay after shooting that scene.

This was a bold step in movie making, and a very emotional piece. I would give this movie a 8/10 in rating.
