Movie Review: Girl With a Pearl Earring (2003)

Girl With a Pearl Earring is a fictional tale of a real life painting of the same title, by the 17th century Dutch painter, Johannes Vermeer. The character of the maid in the painting, Griet, is played by the beautiful Scarlett Johansson, and the painter is played by Colin Firth. The romance drama is about how a reclusive painter took a liking in his new maid, and got inspired to paint her for his sole client, a rich aristocrat in his town.  It is slow paced, and shows how the painter developed some level of affection for the maid, and how she grew fond of her master too, but they never got intimate. She was more like his muse for the masterpiece he went on to create when he decided to paint her.

Scarlett Johansson was in her late teens in this movie, and still has a very innocent look, but her acting is great. I would say she put forward great acting in movies like this and The Other Boleyn Girl, than her later works, where she doesn't really have to get emotional with her acting. Her character is very naive in this movie, but strong willed at the same time. One low point for me in this movie is that, even though it is two hours long, it seems short, Maybe because painting takes a lot of time and focus, and the director made sure to capture the essence and the beauty of the art form. Colin Firth is quite none verbal in most of the scenes of the movie, and depends a lot on body language to pass his message across. It happened that the maid actually understood him better than his wife, and it fascinated him.

There are a lot of quiet moments in the movie. It is romantic, but not so romantic. I would give it a 7 out of 10 in rating.
