Zack (role played by Freddie Prinze Jr.), the most good-looking jock in a high school gets ditched by his girlfriend, 6 weeks to Prom. While downplaying the effect it might have on his status, he had a bet with his best buddie, Dean (Paul Walker's character), that he could turn any girl into a prospective Prom Queen in 6 weeks, just by dating her. The bet was on, and the Dean chose Laney (Rachael Leigh Cook), a recluse geek as the experimental girl. The battle was on, and Zack got more than what he bargained for.
This movie is a pretty good High School Romance Comedy in that the normal format of most of the movies like it is not used in this one; it is quite different, and very enjoyable. When Zack started trying to spend time with Laney all of a sudden, she was not all star struck, like you would expect. And this is not because she is trying to not be attracted to the number one jock in her school, but because she thought he was coming around her because he wanted her to tutor him on a subject he was flunking. This made her bold in his presence, and by the time she knew that he wanted to date her, she had already gotten used to him, so she didn't become nervous around him For me, this formula, which is quite different, helped the movie stand tall among movies similar to it.
Also, there is an abundance of good actors for support, and it helped color up the movie, without it going off the tangent. You had Anna Paquin (True Blood, X-Men, Finding Forester...), Usher, Gabriel Union (Bring It On, Deliver Us From Eva, Think Like a Man...), and a couple other good supporting actors. The ending wasn't so grand, but the rest of the movie is really good. The build up of love between Zack and Laney is enjoyable to watch, and feels very real. This movie is actually the motivation for most of the romance novels I have written so far in my lifetime. Ever since I saw it for the first time in 1999, I fell in love with the plot. And now, 16 years later, it still motivates me to make my own twist to the whole story-line. I would give it a 8.5/10 in rating.
