Cruel Intentions is a romance drama with some comedy in the mix. Sebastian (played by Ryan Phillippe)and Kathryn (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) are teenage stepbrother and stepsister that live very sexually active lives. They like to plan ways to get their next conquests, team up, and make people's lives miserable. After a new girl, Annette (Reese Witherspoon) moves into the neighborhood, Sebastian and Kathryn have a bet- If Sebastian can get in her pants, Kathryn would finally grant him his heart's desire of wanting to sleep with her (Kathryn). And if he loses the bet, then Kathryn would get his exotic car. The bet was a tough one cos Annette, the girl in question was a 'miss goody two shoes,' who had sworn to keep her virginity till she found true love. The cold and heartless Sebastian went to work on her immediately, charming her, and using all his moves on her. But, for the first time, he found himself developing real feelings for the girl who was just meant to be a target.
While Sebastian was busy working on winning his bet, his stepsister, Kathryn was out plotting ways to make it difficult for her stepbrother to have his way with the girl, and she also took a very innocent girl, Cecile (Selma Blair) under her wings, to do her every bidding.
For a high school movie, this movie has a very complicated plot. It is like a chess game the way stepbrother and stepsister play themselves. And Kathryn used the art of seduction from a female angle to perfection. The comedy that Selma Blair brought to the table was well needed, and well timed. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe were already engaged to be married when this movie came out, so they must definitely would have already been dating during the shooting of the movie- This is is very evident in their love scenes together; they look like a real couple, which they already were anyway. There was a scene in a car where Witherspoon's character was trying to make Ryan Philippe's character laugh, and you could tell that Phillippe's laughs were real, and not acted.
The romance is really electrifying towards the end, and the movie plot is really good. I think the only problem I had was the slurry way most of the characters in the movie talked, but I got used to that after a while. I would give this movie a 8.5 out of 10 in rating.
